A recent study indicates that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Research printed in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users buying these drugs should be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the treatment is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Weighing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication report a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
